Over the last couple of years I have let my blonde hair get a little…uh…more natural. Don’t get me wrong, I’m naturally a blonde (my love of pumpkin spice lattes, puppies and that face I make when I’m thinking should give that away fairly quickly) but it has definitely gone a little more to the dark side in the last number of years. Anywho, in the fall I went to my local salon here in Victoria and I asked my very talented stylist to “make me blonder but keep it low maintenance, I have a baby coming after all”. I originally wanted to go much blonder but she talked me out of it for the sake of staying on the side of “low maintenance and budget friendly” (my husband must have called her ahead of time). I was also hoping to get rid of a lot of the goldy tones that had crept in, I’m a super big fan of the ashy blonde side of life. Anywho, she worked her magic and I came out blonder but low maintenance (every girl’s wish right?!). Right off the bat, I knew I had to get some products specifically formulated to keep my blonde hair blonde and keep the brassiness away. That being said, I’m also a world class procrastinator. So about a month went by and a mysterious package showed up on my doorstep with my name on it. On a completely separate side note, you want to drive your spouse insane? Don’t open said package with mysterious address, just let it sit there for a few hours – it’s like a kitty to catnip. Jordan was finally like “CAN I PLEASE JUST OPEN IT?!”
And guess what it was?! A package from Dessange Paris! California Blonde Shampoo! AND conditioner, AND elixir AND colour correcting cream! WOO! And then guess what? I had a baby two weeks later. So I never reviewed them and then I got it in my head I wanted to start a new blog and I’d wait till then. Oops. It’s been only like 9 months.
Anywho, the good part is I used allll of it so I’ve got a very good idea how i like it. Starting with the basics – I had never heard of Dessange Paris before so I looked them up. Turns out I wasn’t crazy, Dessange haircare is the latest European beauty product to come on over this way. Created by the House of Dessange—an haute salon (and I do mean HAUTE) with many many locations globally. The line promises salon-quality care at home with an emphasis on both natural hair colour or in my case..not. So I was eager to see if it’d deliver.
Truthfully, when I first started using them I didn’t notice much of a difference, but as time went on I realized it had definitely kept the ol’faithful brass at bay. I especially noticed an excellent tone when I used the Brass Color Correcting Creme. BUT the real moment of truth was, I kid you not – I only wash my hair once a week or so but every time I did, I’d have people ask me if I had gotten my hair done! Everyone always said it looked lighter…how? I do not know. But all their products are called “Illuminating” sooooo maybe that’s why.
Would I buy it again? The price point was great! 13-15 dollars for each product when I looked it up (only available at Shopper’s Drugmart ). Truthfully, I liked the shampoo and conditioner but I wasn’t crazy on the smell. Definitely a Haute Salon smell (not that I spend a lot of time in Haute Salons). My hair didn’t feel any different but it did look good and I haven’t had a color appointment since! I absolutely L O V E D the Color Correcting Creme and will definitely buy that again. The underwow-ing factor was definitely the Illuminating Elixir. I’d use it after I showered before I’d blow dry my hair but I found it didn’t really feel like it was nourishing my hair how it had promised, so that was a little disappointing.
Overall, I enjoyed using the products but the clear winner was the toner creme. Maybe it’s the hair snob in me talking, I dunno. Stylists, help me out – is it possible to get salon quality products at a drugstore price point? Let me know!
